A River Dogs Christmas Carol – The Classic Story Retold!

Twas’ the night before Christmas, and all through the River Dogs house, not a creature was stirring, not even Helen dressed as a mouse. With the Man in Shorts in his kerchief and Auntie Lucy in her cap, we all settled down for a well-earned nap. Yes, folks; we’re closing for the holidays, so what better way to say goodbye than with a ‘festive tail’ to celebrate some of the incredible River Dogs Christmas pics that you’ve sent to us over the past few weeks. It’s time for a River Dogs Christmas Carol!

It’s me, Betsy, and I’ll be the narrator of this River Dogs Christmas Carol! Ok, here I go. Ahem.

The Marley’s were dead, to begin with. That much you must remember, or nothing that follows will seem wondrous (that’s you Betty and Nelly. Quick, get into character. Oh…they’re asleep, well we’ll wake them up when their bit comes around).

They had worked with a tight-fisted, hand to the grindstone, covetous old Doggy Day Care worker named Ebenezer ‘Man in Shorts’ Scrooge, who worked all hours god-sent at his esteemed Doggy Day Care Tadcaster unit, but they had passed seven years ago to this very night. Ebenezer Shorts (we’ll stick with this name from now on!) only employee, Auntie Lucy, was worked to the bone and had finally plucked up the courage to ask for Christmas Day Off.

“The whole day?” Ebenezer Shorts asked.

“Yes, Sir,” said Auntie Lucy. “Please; you can watch re-runs of Crufts and eat as may Hobnobs as you want…”

Ebenezer Shorts considered this for a moment. “Very well,” he snapped, but be here all the earlier the next morning!”. Auntie Lucy ran before he could change his mind, and then Ebenezer Shorts locked up and went back to his cold and lonely house.

As he approached the door, his doorbell made a strange ‘SCHNAKS’ sound, and then everything went quiet. This startled Ebenezer shorts, but still, he made his way up to his room and settled down to a nice supper of cheese and Hobnobs.

At the stroke of 12, the solitary candle on the mantlepiece went out. A ghostly light filled the room, and then two little dogs appeared next to a glorious Christmas wreath.

“Change your ways Ebenezer,” said Betty Marley.

“Yeah,” said Nelly Marley, “and stop eating so many Hobnobs too!

“Bah, Humbug,” said Ebenezer Shorts. “A little biscuit crumb can fool the senses. Yes, there’s more of gravy than of grave about you!”

The Marley sisters laughed. “You shall be haunted by three ghosts”, they said in unison. “Heed their warning if you hope to avoid the path that we tread!”

The Marley sisters disappeared without a trace, leaving Ebenezer Shorts alone in his room. The next minute, he was jolting awake in his chair at the sound of the clock striking 1-am. Had he fallen asleep, or had time simply speeded up?

A bright light flashed into being, forcing Ebenezer Shorts to shield his eyes.

“Right, let’s get this over with,” said a voice by his knee.

“Who’s that?” Ebenezer Shorts cried.

“It’s Otis, the Ghost of Christmas past. Now come on, I’m going to be late for dinner if we don’t get cracking. Grab hold of my tail, and you shall fly!”

Ebenezer Shorts bent down and grabbed hold of Otis’s tail, and suddenly they were soaring above the rooftops in Tadcaster, heading towards a bright light over the River Dogs Tadcaster Unit. They landed safely in the courtyard and peered in through the window.

A young lady was behind the counter, tickling all of the dogs behind their ears.

“That’s Helen,” said Otis. “Remember when she used to work here before your obsession with Hobnobs and money drove her away!” Ebenezer Shorts looked down at the ground and nodded. “And look,” Otis continued, “there you are getting ready for the Christmas party. You loved Christmas once you know”.

“And look over there,” said Ebeneezer Shorts, that’s old Barney Fezziwig, my old dog boss when I was a lad! He used to make the best Christmas Jumpers you know, and he always wore them proudly wherever he went! I remember one year when he made a jumper for each member of ye’ olde River Dogs family. Those were the days. He was about as ruthless as a rose petal that one!”

Almost as if he had heard Ebenezer Shorts mention his name, Barney Fezziwig looked up and smiled. Suddenly, dozens of sets of paws galloped into the room to the sound of Christmas Music – it was the start of the River Dogs Christmas Party! The balls and bowls had been put away, and a large dance floor had been set up in the space where the crew usually played. Logan, the lovable beardie violin player bounced into the room playing a merry jig, much to the delight of the other party goers who danced and barked with smiles on their faces.

Ebenezer Shorts was about to sit down on a chair and join in with the festivities when a very familiar face appeared next to him. It was his old dog, Ollie, the very same pooch as when he was a lad. Even though Ollie couldn’t sense his old master and the spirit that joined him on his fateful quest, Ebenezer still felt fates cold hand pluck at his heart strings as he looked down into the wide open eyes of his old faithful friend.

“Please, Spirit, leave me!” Ebenezer Shorts pleaded, closing his eyes.

“Fair enough,” said Otis, “I’m starting to get a bit peckish anyway. See you later!”

When Ebenezer Shorts opened his eyes, he was back in his cold and lonely room. The clock struck two, and a jolly bark sounded from the next room. He ran in to find a small looking pup in what looked like a Christmas Cracker outfit.

“Alright! Merry Christmas,” said Frankie.

“Who are you?” said Ebenezer Shorts.

“I’m the Ghost of Christmas Present”, said Frankie, “that’s why I look a bit like a cracker. Over eighteen-hundred of my brothers and sisters have come before me. Have you not read the Dachshund Diaries man?! Anyway, I’m supposed to show you how Great Christmas is, so hurry up and grab hold of one of my ears!”

Ebenezer Shorts felt the same surging sensation as he flew through the air and landed at the base of a small house. “Who lives here?” he asked.

“It’s the home of your employee, Auntie Lucy”, said Frankie. It’s Christmas in this part of Yorkshire too you know!”

Ebenezer Shorts looked in through the window. “Such a meagre feast”, he said softly.

“But all the more appreciated”, said Frankie.

“Who’s that boy in the corner?”

“That’s Tiny Barney”, said Frankie, and he isn’t doing too well. If things carry on as the way they are, then I believe the child will die. (Not really folks, it’s just a story!)

“To the founder of the feast, Mr Ebenezer Shorts!” said Auntie Lucy from inside the house.

Ebenezer and Frankie walked through the wall and appeared by the tableside. “I work her so hard, you know,” he said softly. Frankie growled and nodded in agreement.

“To the founder of the feast!” Poppy exclaimed. “If he were here right now I’d bite his leg and show him a piece of my-“

“To the founder of the feast!” Tiny Barney coughed, and then they all smiled and tucked into their dinner.

Ebenezer Shorts was suddenly whisked off his feet as Frankie transported him through time to another Christmas Scene. He was back at River Dogs, watching all of the four-legged friends playing in their finest Christmas clothes, joining in with the merriment of the season and wishing each other a very Merry-sniffalicious Christmas. The scene changed once again, and Ebenezer found himself in the entrance to a large and lonely lighthouse. Two dogs were sat next to each other sharing a cup of hot grog, their collars pulled up tight around their chin in a bid to hold off the bitter wind. Without realising and without planning, they both jumped into whistling a jolly Christmas tune as old as the night itself, and I swear that the wind took pity on them and joined in with the tune in harmony.

The scene changed again sure enough as if a star had exploded in front of Ebenezer’s eyes, and his eyes fell upon a solitary figure in an old mining house. Although she sat alone waiting for her friends and family to return home for Christmas dinner, she had decorated herself with the most glorious festive colours of silver and…well just silver, and looked as though she were the pride of the season. Ebenezer Shorts had never taken the time to consider that one single day could bring so much joy to so many people, people who had nothing but the clothes on their back and the tinsel around their necks. Something like elation crossed with shame consumed his entire being, making his form feel as foggy and unpredictable as the shade that stood on all four paws by his side.

“Right, that’s me done,” said Frankie. “You’ve seen how happy Christmas can make people. Now you’ve got the pleasure of meeting the Ghost of Christmas Future.”

“Please, Spirit,” pleaded Ebenezer Shorts, “must I meet this last spectre? I know that I must change?”

“Meet the spirit, you big baby”, Frankie laughed, and then he disappeared, leaving Ebenezer Shorts alone on the street.

There was a low, menacing growl from somewhere in the shadows, and then a tall dog walked forwards, garbed in long robes as black as shadow.

“Spirit,” Ebenezer Shorts croaked,”. I am willing to follow and to learn with a thankful heart. Lead on”.

“Was that a dog joke?” said Bess. ‘Lead on?’ This is serious business you know. Now, follow me.

They walked to a small, back-alley shop where a group of people were crowding around a pile of belongings.

“I’ve got the sign from above the door”, said Parker, looking rather pleased with himself.

“Very good, Parker, said Pepper. That’ll get you a few dog treats no mistaking.

“Well I’ve got his van”, said Helen. What’ll you give me for that then, eh!”

“Why, Helen, the engine’s still warm. I don’t pay extra for the warmth you know.

“You should; it’s the only warmth he ever had!” The group cackled and laughed as Bess lead Ebenezer Shorts away.

I see, Spirit,” he said glumly. “If I don’t change my ways then I could end up like the poor soul who’s business has been taken over. Show me comfort, what about Auntie Lucy and Tiny Barney. Take me to them.

Bess wagged her tail, and then they magically appeared outside of Auntie Lucy’s house. She was crying into a pan and stirring far too vigorously than needed. Beside the fire lay an empty collar and an un-chewed bone.

“Not Tiny Barney!” Ebenezer Shorts cried. “Please, Spirit, show me no more. I have changed; I will love Christmas and live every minute of my life to the full. I promise you this!”

“There’s one more stop we need to make first”, said Bess. She rounded a corner and glided towards a gravestone in the centre of a barren field. There was a broken videotape with the word ‘Crufts’ written on it, a torn packet of Hobnobs, and a single pair of shorts obscuring the writing on the stone.

Ebenezer Shorts walked forwards and howled with fear as he saw his own name upon the stone. He ran back to plead for mercy but found that the shadows were encroaching on him from every angle. He fell to his knees and found himself back in his own room, his chair and his dinner plate exactly where they were the night before. Excited to be back, he put on his best clothes and ran into the street to wish everybody in Tadcaster a Merry Christmas.

“You there!” he suddenly cried. Is the prize Turkey still for sale in the butchers shop?

“You mean the one twice the size of me?” said little Rosie. “Yep, it sure is!”

“A remarkable girl!” said Ebenezer. “Go and buy it for me and get an Uber back here as fast as you can, I’ll give you as many homemade dog treats as you want!”

“Wow! You got it Mister!” Rosie ran off like a shot and came back a short while later. Ebenezer jumped in the cab and took the turkey straight to Auntie Lucy’s house for her and Tiny Barney.

True to his word, Ebenezer Shorts kept the spirit of a River Dogs Christmas alive every day of the year. His gift of the turkey proved to be the biggest Christmas feast that they had ever seen. He won Helen back, and together they kept River Dogs alive (and he kept the sign above the door and the van too!) The spirits had managed to save him all in one night; they can do that you know, in fact, they can do anything that they like!

So, from all of us here at River Dogs, we wish you a Very Merry River Dogs Christmas! And remember, lay off the Hobnobs!
