Dogs don’t stay puppies for ever, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t stay active and healthy when they get older. Just like humans, Dogs can get arthritis and other mobility problems that make them a little slower or a little less inclined to chase their reflection through the river. But with some helpful Dog Physio Exercises you can help them to stay active for longer and make them feel three years old again (or 21 if you’re counting in dog years. Dog Physio Exercises To Keep Your Pet Active.
We all love a good massage, but this simple dog physio exercise has more benefits than just making you feel calm and relaxed. Massaging your pet can help to reduce muscle spasms, increase blood circulation and enhance their muscles. Massage eases stiffness and loosens muscles around the joints, helping your pooch to move more freely and without as much pain. It can even encourage lymphatic draining, and if you’re not already their favourite human being then you soon will be after a long session of strokes and rubs.
Place your dog in a lying down position and then proceed to rub and and massage each of the major muscle groups. Light taps can also be effective in areas that are tender to get the blood flowing and stimulate the muscles. Start your massage near the front limbs and work backwards, taking care not to put too much pressure on. You know your own dog, so look out for signs of discomfort and only continue if your pet is happy and calm.
With four legs working much harder than our own two at any given time, it’s not surprising that your furry friends sometimes get aches and pains. Arthritis is a common problem in dogs that are active from a young age, especially if they spent a lot of their youth bounding through fields and jumping over walls like ours did. Simple dog physio exercises can help to relieve pressure and stiffness in their hind and front legs and help them to enjoy walking and being active again.
A good daily dog physio exercise is to sit next to your pet whilst he or she is standing and slowly lift one leg into the air, gently stretching the muscles. Hold this position for 5-10 seconds and then return the leg to the floor before repeating the process with your dog’s other legs. Repeat the entire process 5 times and try to work this into your daily routine.
Another great exercise for hind legs is the stair stand. Place your dog’s front paws up on a step or low chair and have them stand for a short while. This is a great way of helping to increase their ability to hold their weight with their back legs and a good all round strengthening exercise.
Targeted strengthening dog physio exercises are the key to helping problems with the main muscle groups that your pet uses to stand, run and walk – everything that they need to stay happy and active. This exercise specifically targets the glutes and lateral thigh muscles and helps to strengthen them. To walk your dog through a side step exercise, stand with your body facing towards your dog’s side with one hand on his or her collar and one hand on the opposite hip. Step towards your pet until he or she steps to one side in a sideways movement but with no forward motion. Start at first with 3 to 5 gentle steps, and then when you’re confident that your dog is taking to the exercise well you can work up to 10 to 15 steps in each direction.
You might think that avoiding walking and playing altogether would be the best idea, but you’d be wrong! Keeping your furry friends active is incredibly important as you don’t want them to seize up altogether. Walking is one of the simplest dog physio exercises because it’s something that you and your pet are already used to, but you need to make sure that it’s in a controlled environment. Play and walk on soft surfaces wherever possible; if you have a garden then that would be a great place to do a few laps and to throw some toys, but a local doggy day care centre (River Dogs preferably!) would also be a good place for your best friend to stretch his or her legs.
No, were not talking about swimming the channel, but some gentle movement in water can really help to strengthen your dogs limbs without putting them under pressure on a long walk. We know how nice it is to float through water, and swimming is a rehabilitation exercises that works for us humans too. This is one of our dog physio exercises that you can do together in any body of water, and whilst you might not have a swimming pool at home it’s an inexpensive way to help your dog cope with arthritis and other bone or muscle conditions/injuries. Hydrotherapy is a more costly option that is recommended by a lot of vets as a form of after treatment for spine or leg operations. It’s basically a treadmill in a tank of water, and it gets your dog used to walking in a controlled and slow environment.
