Planet Of The Dogs – The Dog Lovers Have Disappeared!
Hello everyone, and welcome back to another River Dogs dog blog! First of all, we’d like to check in to make sure that all of our dog lovers have had a very nice Christmas and New Year? Hopefully, the answer is a humongous yes, and we’d love to hear what you and your furry friends got up to over the festive period. Did your little pals receive an exciting doggy Christmas present that you want to share with us? Make sure that you take a picture and send it over to our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages so that we can take a look at it!
Well…I keep saying ‘us’ and ‘we’, but something incredibly strange has happened while we’ve been away this past few weeks. You see, I am now the only human left at River Dogs. All of our dedicated dog lovers, our members of staff that tirelessly look after your four-legged friends have disappeared! I came into the unit on Monday Morning after my festive break and found the River Dogs unit being looked after by all of our dogs; no receptionist, no staff, no walkers, just me! What follows is a Sci-Fi tale not for the faint-of-heart. Welcome, readers, to…
The Planet Of The Dogs – Where Have All The Dog Lovers Gone?
The door opened, and I was instantly hit by a wall of playful noise. This didn’t seem to be anything out of the ordinary; the River Dogs crew are usually pretty vocal first thing in a morning (and we wouldn’t have it any other way). I walked up to the desk to check who was going to be in this morning and found a familiar face staring up at me. He was wearing a River Dogs jumper and had already started preparing the doggy day care health check-up lists for the day.
“Where are all the humans?” I asked. “Where are Helen and Lucy? Where’s George?”
Barney shrugged his shoulders and carried on filing, his paws working ten-to-the-dozen as he began organizing homemade dog treats for the customers that would be arriving in the afternoon.
I turned and walked into the reception area; surely this was just a strange trick? Surely Helen was around here somewhere. I would have even settled for seeing Mark sitting there with a packet of HobNobs and his feet up on a chair. Another familiar furry face appeared over the top of the counter with a set of keys for me. It was becoming more and more difficult to ignore my suspicions – the River Dogs were taking over the business!
Now I know that your little boys and girls are incredibly well behaved 99.7% of the time, but let me tell you readers and fellow dog lovers; it was anarchy in there (or dogarchy even!). For starters, a ginormous bear had taken over one of the main sofas in the play area, or at least that was I thought as I skulked silently through the gate and into the lion’s den (or dog’s den in this case). On closer inspection, I spotted Pepper’s legs sticking out from beneath the bear’s furry legs.
“Come on, Logan,” I whispered, “you’re squashing Pepper underneath there!” Logan laughed and lifted a leg as Pepper crawled out gasping for air. I handed her a peppermint chew (she loves anything with her name in it) and tip-toed into the snug area.
With no human intervention, the sofa had become a hang out for the whos-who of River Dogs. I’ve never seen so many paws on one piece of furniture! The sheer audacity for rule-breaking made me feel a little faint, but I took a picture as evidence and carried on out into the yard to see what I could find. Surely there would be some dog lovers out there that could explain to me what was going on!
Sadly, the same situation as inside could be found outside in the play yard. The pups out here looked confused and a little frightened. They were desperately searching for someone to tickle the sweet spots behind their ears and to give them cuddles and ran at me as though I were a juicy piece of meat. It took all of my dog care training to tickle three of them at once (which is tough when you only have two hands) and, once they had calmed down, I turned to head back inside.
“What’s going on here?” Penny asked, a hint of despair in her voice.
“Something feels strange, Pen,” I replied, the cogs in my brain whirring like a runaway steam train. “I’m going to get to the bottom of it, but I’m going to need your help!”
“Me?” Penny asked shocked. “But what can I do?”
“I need your eyes and nose. If we’re going to restore order to River Dogs, then we need to figure out where the other dog lovers have gone. We need to find Helen and the gang.”
Just then, a mysterious note slipped in through the letterbox. Penny ran over and opened it up before jumping back in alarm. I bent down and picked up the paper, the glue on the cut-out letters still wet to the touch.
If you want to see Helen and the River Dogs crew again, it read, then you better do exactly as I say!
